DIY Painted & Antiqued Chair

Flea Market European Bistro Chair gets a new look. Painted & waxed for a antique look.

So if I hadn’t mentioned painting a chair I would say the burlap sack steals the show!

Many of you know that navigating the online word is both fun and difficult!

You feel lonely at the beginning and then…

slowly you find your tribe!

This beautiful burlap sack was a gift from Kitty of Heart Vintage Design.

She has followed me from the beginning. Cheering me on every step of they way.

What a thoughtful gift…I think she knows me well even if we have never met!

So, now on to the European Bistro chair that never sold!

DIY - Painting and Antiquing a Bistro Chair with Chalk Paint

I don’t always get it right when it comes to buying and selling!

I had purchased three European Bistro chairs in Dallas.

They were all the rage online but sat unwanted in my booth.

I decided to paint one of them and use it as a prop for my photos.

First I wiped down the chair getting rid of cobwebs and dust.

The chair had a layer of blackish blue paint and showed some serious signs of wear.

Since I wanted the chair to look old I decided not to strip it.

I would leave the layers of paint so that when I distressed the chair these layers would show through.

DIY Painted Bistro Chair. I had these chairs that did not sell so I decided to antique one of them and use it for display's.

I used Country Chic furniture paint in Cheesecake.

I applied two coats of paint for full coverage.

Once the paint was dry, I lightly sanded certain areas to create a distressed look.

Then came the Briwax in dark brown.

I like to use lint free clothes for antiquing instead of a brush.

You need to work the wax so you get a nice even finish.

I also wear gloves because it is hard to get the dark wax out of your finger nails!

Once you work the wax into the chair it should feel smooth and silky.

If your piece feels tacky, just keep buffing it with a cloth to wipe away the excess wax.

The little chair has a new look in a few short steps.

Do you like the black version or the antiqued version?

I like the antiqued version for my photos and may just do the other two chairs.

It will be interesting to see if this color sells!

Hope your summer has been good to you 🙂

Kindly, xo

  • I love the lighter antiqued version, of course because I love everything in some shade of white! 🙂 The pillow is gorgeous and I’m sure you will sell this chair (if you even want to now) in a minute! Which reminds me I have about 6 folding chairs in the garage waiting for paint! 🙂

  • I liked the antiqued version – the pillow also pulls it all together. Fun project – I seem to be stuck on stain lately just can’t seem to find a paint brand that works as a one size fits all. What do you like about this Country Chic paint?

    • Hi Carole, I don’t paint much and had this on hand. It goes on nice and smooth and I like the color. I would love to try MMS Milk paint…have you tried it?
