Barn Sale|DIY Farm Sign

Last week did not go as planned!

The kind of news you don’t want to receive…the kind that stops you in your tracks.

So a few of my days became nonproductive…doing what I had to do…like filling up my antique booth.

But the taxes I needed to get done sat on my desk unattended.

When someone you love fights a health battle…you fight too!

So in the midst of my week, I took a break from the heartache to work on a simple farm sign.

In an odd way, it was a tiny bit of therapy.

If you follow us on Instagram or have shopped with us, you will recognize the large “Farm Sign” above.

Old barn wood with “heavy” old metal letters!

I love these signs, but I know they are not for everyone due to the sheer weight!

So I decided to make a lighter version using some thinner letters.

They had a few signs of rust, but I still sprayed them with vinegar to try to enhance those areas.

You’ll find all kinds of methods to do this online.

I don’t rust things often, but when I do, I,  usually only use vinegar and the sunshine.

This time we had a stubborn “A!”

It came as no surprise to me…this was one of those weeks!

I could have tried toilet bowl cleaner or some other method, but I decided to leave it!

Most of my things are imperfect due to the test of time, so it only seemed fitting to leave well enough alone.

My hubby picked out a unique piece of wood from our stash.

They call this a live edge.

I lined up the letters to give me an idea of where I wanted him to cut the board.

Farm Sign. Using small tacks and wood glue to secure the letters to the wood

I pre-drilled holes randomly into the letters.

Then I applied wood glue to the tips of the tacks and hammered them into place.

The tacks are not threaded and thus don’t stay in place so the wood glue is needed.

I added two screws to the back and some old chain.

As far as the letters…you can find them everywhere these days.

Have fun friends and thank you for being a bright spot in my day 🙂

Kindly, xo

  • I love it Jane and I agree, about leaving that A alone. Perfectly imperfect. 🙂
But, what I love even more is that you shared a behind the scenes struggle. A good reminder to be gentle with each other. We never know what is happening in someone’s life. What news they are trying to absorb.
Absolutely creating is therapeutic. Love your sign and your blog! Your beautiful self shines through. xo

  • When someone we care about hurts it has this way of penetrating, like a ripple effect. Sometimes I think it’s so additional strength can bring light on the situation. I’ll be praying for you and those who are hurting. Then finding a release through creating is also good and your farm sign well I just love it.. because that simple word FARM says so much..

  • Nice sign Jane. Sorry to hear that your week wasn’t stellar. It’s so good to have an outlet like you do. Life never seems to go as we plan, but at least art helps us to have the strength to embrace all the ups and downs.

Sending love and hugs your way! Love the sign. I’m working on something similar that says “home”, and I hadn’t thought about adding chain. I might do that, love the way it looks! Take care! <3
